Neeraj Chopra: India’s Olympic Gold Medalist finishes in 2nd Place in Diamond League 2023

World Champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra fell short in his bid to defend his Diamond League title, finishing in second place with a modest performance of 83.80 meters on Saturday.

Behind Chopra was Waldez, who won silver at the Budapest Worlds and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and he had also won the Diamond League title in 2017 and 2018.

This is the same venue where Chopra had secured second place in the 2022 World Championship.

The Indian athlete, who achieved a personal best of 89.94 meters before winning the historic gold at the World Championship last month, had claimed two individual Diamond League victories on May 5 in Doha and June 30 in Lausanne.

After winning the world title with a throw of 88.17 meters in Budapest, he became only the third javelin thrower in history to hold both Olympic and World Championship titles. Just a few days after winning the World Championship title, he competed in the Zurich Diamond League on August 31, where he finished in second place behind Waldez.

Neeraj Chopra will now head to the Asian Games in Hangzhou later this month, where he will aim to defend the gold he won in Indonesia in 2018.
