Australia’s Cricket World Cup Campaign Could Take a Big Hit. Australia’s hopes in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign might have taken a significant blow as their star batsman, Travis Head, had to retire hurt during the fourth One Day International against South Africa in Centurion on Friday.
Australia is eagerly waiting to see if Head will be fit to play in the World Cup or not because head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that the left-handed player has suffered a fracture.
McDonald stated regarding the injury, “It’s a confirmed fracture. Assessing how it’s suitable for a time frame, that will be evaluated tomorrow.”

“I think they’ll go into a bit more detail tomorrow and more scans, and then we’ll manage it from there. I’m not a medical person, but I think it’s just above the knuckle by itself…it’s in the joint. It’s approaching the World Cup quite quickly, and fingers are nearing each other.”
Head had been included in Australia’s initial 15-man squad for the World Cup and might have to undergo rigorous rehabilitation to be fit for his team’s opening match against host India in Chennai on October 8.
Teams participating in the World Cup have until September 28 to submit their final squads of 15 players to the ICC for the tournament, and any changes can be made only with the consent of the organizers after that date.
If Head is ruled out, Australia has a few options to consider for his replacement, with Test star Marnus Labuschagne and hard-hitting all-rounder Tim David being among the leading contenders.
